Joyland Film Screening
Joyland Film Screening and Panel Event (LGBT+ History Month)
This month, we had the privilege of being invited to a screening of Joyland organized by Newham Community Cinema. After the film, we participated in a panel discussion about its themes, which brought out some of its most poignant aspects. It was a great way to delve into the film's layers and pick out its key messages.
If you haven't seen Joyland yet, we can't recommend it enough. It's a meticulously crafted depiction of a family living in proximity, focusing on the story of a young man experiencing queer attraction for the first time.
The acting is flawless, with multiple interweaving storylines painting a vivid picture of life in an extended family setting in Pakistan, highlighting the everyday sacrifices and compromises made by the family members.
Without giving away the ending, the film's main theme revolves around freedom and the desire to live a life free of judgment. It also explores the ideas of belonging, family and sexual love, and the challenges of finding them within a community.

We hope you get a chance to see it!
With warm wishes,
